The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly break until spring, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to supply fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the traditional method of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
