People who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism after their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his leadership spoke volumes about his commitment to tackling the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The organization is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the world" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Inherited Challenge

The current pontiff, who took the position in May, has inherited this persistent issue that has plagued the Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were victimized by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we want to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Historic Meeting

Seven members of the coalition, which represents victims and supporters from over thirty countries, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The discussion, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the account of a woman victimized at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in Canada.

They noted the leader was "tender" about their own story and appeared "very humble, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Changes

The organization is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have spoken with specialists and gathered documents that they will present to Pope Leo.

"He appeared interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of religious officials or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they informed the pontiff at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the correct path," Hickey stated.

Hickey concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
